DESCRIPTION: This course explores a real-life near-miss incident involving an elevator rescue, providing critical insights and actionable lessons for emergency responders. The instructor will recount a high-stakes event where an elevator unexpectedly fell to the pit during a top-access hatch removal, with 16 individuals trapped inside. The incident placed the instructor and crew in immediate danger, including one firefighter narrowly escaping, and highlights the unpredictable challenges of elevator rescues.

Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the risks associated with elevator operations and learn multiple techniques to prevent unexpected elevator movement during rescues. Through a detailed examination of this event, attendees will explore safety measures, operational strategies, and best practices to enhance crew and victim safety. This lecture is essential for any firefighter or emergency responder seeking to improve their knowledge and preparedness in elevator rescue scenarios .

INSTRUCTOR: Mike Dragonetti
Mike Dragonetti is a recently retired firefighter of the Stamford (CT) Fire Department, after 28 years of service. For 20 of those years, he was assigned to Rescue Co. 1. He is a nationally recognized fire service instructor and has presented courses in elevator operations at the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) Technical Rescue School (2002-2005). He is a H.O.T. instructor at FDIC International, a contributing author for Fire Engineering Magazine and has appeared in 3 seasons of Training Minutes videos. Prior to developing and teaching "Elevator Emergency Management" in 1999, he had extensive experience in the New York City metropolitan area Constructing, modernizing, maintaining, and repairing elevators and escalators with one of the largest elevator companies in the world. He is the founder and president of Dragon Rescue Management, a technical rescue training company.
